Two Ten Million Dollar Ideas

So, I raised two kids, one doing very well, the other one struggling a bit, but I have faith he will turn out just fine. Now what. What do I do with the rest of my life. Lets see, I could invent something. Google is having a contest for great ideas. If you win you get 10 million dollars to implement your idea. That’s it, I’ll be an idea man.

My first idea is blackout night in America. Once a week, lets say Wednesday, all the television stations, and the Internet go dark for three hours. Americans have to find something else to do with their time. The can read books, or play games with their kids or have a conversation, and not about the television shows your missing. I’m not really sure how the $10 million will pay for that. It’s a pittance of what the television companies make in advertising. Maybe the money can go to non-violent anarchist, who can somehow shutdown the grid for three hours every Wednesday night, without blowing anything up, or causing too big a mess. Think of how healthy that would be, parents talking with their children, domestically associated living partners of all sizes and orientations talking to each other. People picking up a book to read. Hell, even paying attention to the dog would be better than watching the mindless reality TV drivel that’s called entertainment nowadays. It would be a chance for America to stop being frightened to death every night by the hysterical 24x7 news machine and take a breath. Plus I figure Wednesday is perfect because there is little chance of football being on that night.

The second idea is to take the money and start handing it out to school children, maybe middle schoolers or high schoolers. Here’s the deal though, they have to do something charitable with it. It can’t be given to a friend or relative, they have to come up with some way of helping the poor or the sick or the elderly. And they can’t just hand them the money. They have to implement a program in the community, or find out what the local shelter, or assisted living facility needs and buy it for them. They could go on Kiva.org to distribute micro loans to people around the world. They could find a family that needs food and take them shopping. They could organize and pay for bringing comfort dogs to senior citizens or people who are shut-ins. The benefits are two fold, the children learn about the gift of giving, and can see how their actions can positively affect others. Also, the community would get the benefit of the things the children do with the money. The kids can list this on their college applications, or job resumes. Of course we can’t just hand them the money, outright, we’d never see it again. We would have to involve law enforcement, and have them walking around with night sticks to keep the little bastards in line.

These ideas are probably not techie enough or realistic enough to win the 10 mil, and sure they are somewhat pollyanish. But it beats blowing the 10 million in Vegas on hookers and a suite at Ceasers... but not by much.
